8 ways to save money on dental

#1 Brushing and flossing can save you money

With many people working from home or just having a different schedule, one of the first things that change is our daily habits. Skipping on brushing your teeth and heading straight to the home office may seem like a harmless decision at the time, but the ramifications could be significant.

Did you know that the best person to take care of your dental health is you? With proper dental habits, you can avoid most of the issues that lead to expensive visits to the dentist.

In many cases, costly dental work is often the result of poor oral hygiene practices or bad habits. For other treatment, your dentist can prepare a plan to help you manage the unexpected.

Brushing and flossing morning and night will keep your plaque in check and reduce the likelihood of fillings, decay, gum disease, sensitivity, missing teeth and even root canals.

If you’re relying on brushing alone to keep your teeth clean, you are missing all the surface area between the teeth.

#2 Consider your diet to save your teeth

Have you been snacking and drinking more during COVID-19? The food and drink choices you make have a significant impact on the health of your teeth and gums.

Sugary drinks, including soft drinks and bottled juices, contribute to the build-up of plaque on teeth. Whereas alcoholic and sports drinks produce acids which wear down the enamel.

The only drink that is good for our teeth is water, and preferably tap water which also contains fluoride. The small amounts of fluoride added to the tap water in Australia are estimated to reduce dental caries in children by up to 35%. You can be kind to your teeth, your wallet, and the environment by bringing tap water with you wherever you go.

Similarly, processed foods which are high in sugar will also contribute to tooth decay. If you can avoid them and snack on low sugar options, or fruit, nuts and vegetables, your teeth will keep for longer.

#3 Keep up regular check-ups to avoid big bills in the future

Most people will regularly service their car, and replace tyres, brakes and oil to keep it from breaking down. Keeping your teeth healthy with a regular check-up should also be part of your routine.

A check-up every six months will give you the comfort of knowing that your dental health is on track, and you shouldn’t have any nasty (expensive) surprises ahead.

If you haven’t been to the dentist in over a year, we encourage you to book in for a clean and check-up. If there is further work required, a payment plan can be arranged so that you can fix it now and avoid more significant problems and expenses in future.

#4 Is that mouth wash necessary or an extra expense?

If you are following the above practices, you shouldn’t need a mouthwash unless a medical or dental practitioner has advised it.

#5 Avoid the dangers of bruxism.

Doctors throughout the medical fraternity are reporting an increase in stress and anxiety in the community, which can often result in people clenching or grinding their teeth (bruxism).

Grinding and clenching of your teeth can cause tooth enamel to wear away and result in more severe problems such as worn, chipped or broken teeth, and even cracked teeth.

Many people may not even be aware they are grinding their teeth as it is happening at night while they sleep. If you are waking with headaches or sharp pains in your jaw, you could be suffering from sleep bruxism. A night splint will help you to avoid these problems.
